The Anambra State Police Command has assured residents that intensive rescue operations are ongoing following the collapse of a three-storey building, Elite Five Star Lodge, in Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area of the state.
The building, located beside Tonimas Filling Station, Amokpala, reportedly collapsed late on Sunday night, July 26, 2026, trapping an unspecified number of occupants beneath the rubble.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, a Police-led joint security team swiftly responded to the distress call, securing the area and coordinating rescue efforts alongside other security agencies.
The Anambra State Fire Service and the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) also mobilized immediately to the scene, working tirelessly to rescue victims trapped in the debris.
The police disclosed that several injured persons have already been rescued and rushed to a hospital in Oko, where they are receiving treatment.
However, rescue operations are still in progress as emergency responders continue searching for others who may remain trapped.
The Command noted that the exact number of casualties or affected persons could not yet be confirmed, emphasizing that only verified information would be released as the operation continues.
Residents have been urged to remain calm, refrain from spreading unverified reports, and keep away from the disaster scene to allow rescue personnel unrestricted access.
The Police assured the public that further updates would be provided as more confirmed information becomes available.
