The Child Protection Network (CPN), Anambra State Chapter, has called for a comprehensive investigation into an alleged case of child sexual abuse in the state.
The group made the call in a statement by its State Coordinator, Anekwe Eucharia Ijeoma, following the reported arrest of a 36-year-old woman in connection with the case.
CPN said the arrest was a step towards accountability, but urged investigators to establish whether other individuals were involved in the alleged production, distribution or circulation of materials connected to the case.
The organisation called on law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and prosecute anyone found culpable in accordance with the law.
It also urged authorities and other stakeholders to protect the identities and privacy of the affected children throughout the investigation and judicial process.
CPN expressed concern over the physical and psychological impact of child sexual abuse and called for appropriate medical, psychosocial and legal support for affected children.
The group commended the Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs Esther Onyekesi, for efforts to provide support to the children.
It further urged parents, schools, religious institutions, community leaders and members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspected cases of child abuse to the appropriate authorities.
CPN reaffirmed its commitment to working with government agencies, security authorities, civil society organisations and communities to strengthen child protection across Anambra State.
The organisation stressed that children must be protected from exploitation and abuse, while urging that justice be pursued through due process.
