Chairman of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council (ASTRC), Igwe Chidubem Iweka (Eze Iweka III of Obosi), has officially announced the commencement of activities for three major cultural festivals in Obosi.
The royal proclamation, made at his palace on July 17, 2026, unveiled the organizing committee for the Ite Umatu Eze Obosi, Obiora Obosi 2026, and Ito-Ogbo Obosi 2027 festivals.
Igwe Iweka said Obiora Obosi 2026, the community’s New Yam Festival promoting peace and unity, will hold on October 24, 2026. The Ite Umatu Eze Obosi festival, celebrating the harvest of crops other than yam, will be revived after years of inactivity and is scheduled for August 30, 2026.
He also announced that the prestigious Ito-Ogbo Obosi festival, held every three years to honour indigenes aged 80 and above, will take place on March 27, 2027.
The monarch noted that Obosi has about 15 cultural festivals aimed at preserving the community’s rich heritage. He also announced a 15-member planning committee headed by Nze Kenneth Ifeatu Obi.
Speaking at the event, General Secretary of the committee, Nze Igwebuike Okenwa, described the Ite Umatu festival as a thanksgiving celebration for the harvest of crops such as maize, cocoyam and cassava.
The event also featured a courtesy visit by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 13, AIG Godwin Iguh Eze, who pledged stronger collaboration with traditional rulers to improve security across Anambra and neighbouring states.
