The Nnewi Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has inaugurated a new executive committee to steer the affairs of the association, with the newly elected Chairman, Hon. Sir Alphonsus Igwebuike, popularly known as “Capacity,” promising to usher in a new era of purposeful and transformative leadership.
The swearing-in ceremony, held at the Kingdom of Gold Hotel, Nnewi, was followed by a grand dinner attended by members of the Bar, friends, associates and distinguished guests, including the former Chief Judge of Anambra State, Chief P. N. Umeadi, who delivered the keynote address.
The newly inaugurated executive comprises Hon. Sir Alphonsus Igwebuike (Chairman), Dr. Chris Origbakpor (Secretary), Uchenna Ebirim (Vice Chairman), Onyekachi Ede (Financial Secretary), Jennifer Chukwu (Treasurer), Uju Nzewi (Welfare Secretary), Chioma Okoledo (Assistant Secretary), Esther Arinzechukwu (Provost), while Veronica Igiriegu-Ukpa, Stanley Ojiaku and Martin Eneje were sworn in as Executive Committee members.
Speaking shortly after taking the oath of office, Igwebuike commended the achievements of the immediate past Chairman, Barr K. G. Abonyi, and pledged to build on the solid foundation already laid.
He noted that aspiring to lead the NBA requires integrity, sound moral character and proven administrative competence.
“The Nnewi NBA will witness a fantastic administration under this new leadership. With time, the results of our performance will begin to manifest,” he assured.
According to him, the new executive is made up of men and women of honour, integrity and commitment, united by a shared vision of taking the branch to greater heights.
“We have assembled a solid, focused and dedicated team. They are not only willing to serve but are equally prepared to make personal sacrifices, including investing their own resources, to ensure that NBA Nnewi becomes the pride of professional associations in Anambra State,” he said.
The Ozubulu-born legal practitioner, who has over 17 years of experience at the Bar, said his passion for service inspired his decision to contest for the chairmanship.
“I simply love serving people. It has always been my driving force to make those around me better. This opportunity to lead the NBA Nnewi Branch is another platform to make my colleagues happy, and they will certainly enjoy my stewardship,” he added.
In his valedictory address, the immediate past Chairman, Barr Abonyi, expressed gratitude to members of the association for the opportunity to serve.
“I sincerely appreciate every member of the NBA Nnewi Branch for your support, constructive criticism and unwavering commitment, which made our administration successful.
I also thank our senior colleagues for their invaluable guidance, mentorship and encouragement throughout our tenure,” he said.
Highlighting the accomplishments of his administration, Abonyi disclosed that significant progress had been made on the construction of the NBA Bar Centre in Nnewi.
He also listed the launch of the branch’s official website, improved welfare and remuneration advocacy for junior lawyers, stronger ties with the national body, production of portraits of past chairmen, and participation in the Lawyers’ Football Tournament held in Enugu last year among the administration’s key achievements.
He expressed confidence that the new leadership possesses the experience, exposure and capacity to surpass the achievements of the outgoing executive and move the branch to even greater heights.
