The Anambra State Government has expressed concern over the decline in moral values, rising violence and indiscipline in the state, calling for collective efforts to restore the state’s value system.
Deputy Governor, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim, stated this during the inauguration of the Ka Anyi Dozie Anambra Volunteers and Ambassadors Network (KADAVAN), a volunteer group established to promote responsible citizenship and support the state’s development agenda.
Ibezim urged members to act as ambassadors in their communities by sensitising residents, mobilising citizens, countering misinformation and protecting public facilities from vandalism.
He stressed that government alone could not achieve sustainable development without citizens taking ownership of public projects and infrastructure.
Commissioner for Information and Value Reorientation, Dr Law Mefor, said the inclusion of value reorientation in his ministry’s mandate was deliberate, noting that urgent measures were needed to address the decline in social values.
Mefor said government’s investment in infrastructure could be undermined if citizens failed to protect and properly use public facilities. He disclosed that a technical committee had been established to drive value reorientation through a “carrot and stick” approach, with KADAVAN enlisted as part of the initiative.
Managing Director of the Anambra State Civic and Social Reformation Office (ANCISRO), Sir Chuka Nnabuife, said supporting development projects was not about politics but about ensuring that investments in security, infrastructure, youth empowerment and value reorientation produced lasting benefits.
Also speaking, Dean of Student Affairs, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof. Kingsley Ubaoji, called for unity and discipline, saying collective commitment was necessary to build a greater Anambra.
Earlier, KADAVAN Founder and General Coordinator, Comrade Okechukwu Cyril-Nwuche, said the network was established on the belief that building a better Anambra could not be left to government alone.
He said the group would mobilise, educate and empower people in Anambra and the diaspora to promote development, good governance, entrepreneurship, peace, security and responsible citizenship.
