A Nigerian professor, Adaeze Menakaya, has been elevated to the position of Deputy Permanent Observer (Projects and Coordination) at the Permanent Observer Mission of the Pan African Intergovernmental Agency for Water and Sanitation for Africa to the United Nations.

In her new role, Menakaya will provide strategic advice on policy development, international cooperation and stakeholder engagement, while helping to strengthen partnerships with governments, development agencies, diplomatic missions and other relevant organisations.

In a congratulatory letter signed by the Permanent Observer, His Excellency Dr. Nabhit Kapur, Menakaya was praised for attaining the position, reportedly 38 years after a Nigerian last occupied such a role.

Menakaya is recognised internationally for her contributions to peace, social justice and women’s empowerment. She received the 2025 Global Champion of Gender for World Peace Merit Award and has been actively involved in advocacy for women’s rights.

She also works with grassroots organisations and the United Nations on projects focused on women’s empowerment, food security and community development.

Menakaya said she dreams of a world where women are empowered, children have access to education and communities work together to improve the lives of their people.
