The Majority Leader of the Anambra West Local Government Legislative Council, Okonkwo Ndubuisi Odili, has urged youths in Anambra West and across Anambra State to actively participate in politics while rejecting election violence and political thuggery.
Odili, who represents Umuoba Anam Ward, spoke during a special podcast organised by the Umuezeanya Youth Association.
The lawmaker expressed concern over low youth participation in elections, saying the trend had weakened the voting strength and political influence of the area.
He urged youths to get closer to the political process, stressing that their participation was necessary to influence decisions affecting their future.
“My advice to the youth of Anambra West and Anambra State in general is not to allow themselves to be used for election violence.
They should be law-abiding while they dedicate more time to their respective businesses or careers and politics because they are the leaders of tomorrow,” he said.
Odili also highlighted some of his legislative interventions, including motions for the grading and sand-filling of roads in Umuoba Abegbu, Mmiata Anam, Iyiora Anam and Ebenebe.
He said he facilitated the inclusion of residents of Umuoba Abegbu and Iyiora Anam in the local government farmers’ empowerment programme, as well as the provision of 100 streetlight panels and poles and a solar-powered borehole for Umuoba Abegbu.
On security, the lawmaker disclosed that he sponsored a Bill seeking to regulate masquerade activities in Anambra West to reduce conflicts associated with masquerade-related clashes. The Bill has passed second reading.
Chairman of Umuezeanya Youth Association, Amb. Olisemeka Obeche, commended Odili for placing youths and grassroots development at the centre of his legislative agenda.
He pledged the association’s readiness to collaborate with the lawmaker, government agencies and NGOs to promote youth empowerment and human capital development in the area.
