Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has approved N1 million each for 31 indigenes of the state who recently returned from South Africa, bringing the total immediate relief package to N31 million.
The Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Ukoha Njoku, disclosed this in a statement, saying the gesture was aimed at providing immediate relief and reassuring the returnees that they had not been abandoned.
The state government has also commenced comprehensive profiling of the returnees to determine their individual circumstances and socio-economic needs.
According to the statement, the exercise will enable the government to design appropriate interventions for their sustainable reintegration and provide social protection tailored to their specific needs.
The government said the gesture demonstrated Governor Otti’s commitment to protecting the dignity and wellbeing of vulnerable citizens.
It added that the initiative reflected the administration’s determination to ensure that every Abian, regardless of circumstances, was given an opportunity to recover, rebuild and contribute meaningfully to society.
The statement said: “Since assumption of office, Governor Otti has prioritised policies and programmes that protect the dignity and wellbeing of citizens, especially those facing hardship.”
The Abia government further assured the returnees that the state remained home to all its sons and daughters, promising that no Abian would be left behind irrespective of their location or circumstances.
