The Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha has advised Christians to verify information from social media before sharing it to curb fake news and misinformation.
The advice was given during the 2026 Communication Week held at Bishop Shanahan Hall, Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity, Onitsha, Anambra State.
Speaking on the theme, “Truth and Wisdom in the Digital Age,” guest speaker, Rev. Fr. Dr. Johnbosco Igwe of Awka Diocese, warned that truth has become monetized in the digital era and urged users to cross-check every online claim before reposting.
He highlighted dangers linked to artificial intelligence, including reduced concentration among youths and hasty conclusions without proper verification, while also acknowledging benefits such as faster learning, easier communication, wider evangelism, and improved medical diagnosis.
Other speakers discussed human dignity, fake news, misinformation, and the future of human voices in the AI age.
Representing the Archdiocesan Director of Communications, Very Rev. Fr. Dr. George Adimike, Rev. Fr. Vincent Chukwuka said the programme was organised to educate the faithful on responsible digital media use.
Chairman of the event, Hon. Pius Onyegbuna, commended the organisers and urged parents to reduce excessive phone use among children.
The event featured a question-and-answer session and comedy performance by Igwe White Entertainment.
