The management of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Anambra State, has appealed to the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP), Anambra State Council, to help attract more students to its Urban and Regional Planning Department.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the NITP delegation at the university’s Igbariam campus, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kate Omenugha, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Obiora Ejiofor, expressed concern over the department’s low student enrolment.
She warned that departments with persistently low student numbers could face closure and urged the institute to promote the course through awareness campaigns in secondary schools and by encouraging admission seekers to consider the programme.
Omenugha reaffirmed the university’s commitment to maintaining National Universities Commission (NUC) accreditation standards, noting that management had continued to support the department.
The NITP delegation also visited the university’s Uli campus, where they encouraged Urban and Regional Planning students to remain committed to the profession.
Head of Department, Mr. Abazu Chinedu, assured the students that the discipline offers diverse career opportunities and a promising future.
