The Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) in charge of the South-East geopolitical zone, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, on Monday led a strategic security stakeholders’ engagement in Anambra State aimed at strengthening collaboration among security agencies, traditional institutions, government representatives, community leaders and other critical stakeholders.
The engagement, held in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, is part of a nationwide initiative designed to address prevailing security challenges, identify emerging threats and develop practical solutions for enhancing intelligence sharing, community participation and coordinated security responses.
Speaking at the event, DIG Onwuemelie stressed the importance of collective responsibility in tackling security concerns, noting that effective policing depends largely on public support and cooperation.
He urged stakeholders to sustain their partnership with security agencies through timely information sharing and active participation in community-based security initiatives.
As part of his operational visit to Anambra State, the DIG also paid a courtesy visit to the traditional ruler of Awka Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Igwe Gibson Nwosu (Eze Uzu II of Awka).
The visit, according to the police, underscored the importance of traditional institutions in promoting peace, conflict resolution and grassroots intelligence gathering.
Responding, the monarch commended the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies for their efforts in maintaining security across the state and assured the DIG of the continued support and cooperation of the traditional institution in fostering a safer environment for residents.
The engagement brought together heads of security agencies, vigilante groups, the Secretary to the Anambra State Government, members of the Anambra State Traditional Council, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, transport unions, the Anambra State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), civil society organisations and representatives of the Northern community.
The programme reinforced the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to strengthening partnerships with traditional rulers, community leaders and other stakeholders as part of ongoing efforts to enhance security and public confidence in the South-East.
