The Anambra State Government has arraigned eight pastors before the State High Court over their alleged involvement in staging fake miracles and exploiting worshippers for financial gain.

A release by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor said the clerics were charged under the Anambra State Homeland Security Law, 2025, and the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud-Related Offences Act for allegedly using paid actors to perform fabricated healings and deliverances during church programmes.

Pastors Remanded, Hearing Fixed

The accused pastors, according to the release, include Ndubisi Nnachukwu, Ekeleme Chris Ugochukwu, Bishop Emeka Nwamkpa, Peter Chukwu, Chinedu Egwuonwu, Ebele Nnachukwu, Miracle Iruoma, and Chukwukadibia Ogwuama.

They were remanded in custody following their arraignment, while the court adjourned the matter to June 15, 2026, for hearing on bail applications and further proceedings.

Government Vows to Protect Citizens

Speaking on the development, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Tobechukwu Nweke (SAN), said the prosecution is aimed at protecting residents from fraudulent practices disguised as religious activities.

He said investigators obtained evidence, including video-recorded statements, which will form part of the prosecution’s case.

Nweke explained that the government would not tolerate any form of deception, whether perpetrated by native doctors or religious leaders.

Potential National Precedent

Observers say the case could become a landmark in Nigeria’s efforts to tackle fraudulent religious practices.

Supporters of the move argue that it will help restore public trust and discourage the exploitation of vulnerable worshippers through staged miracles and false promises of divine intervention.

The Soludo administration maintains that the action is not an attack on religion but a campaign against fraud and public deception.
