Urban renewal: Anambra to demolish over 500 illegal structures in Nnewi

By Chukwuka Ugokwe

The Anambra State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development has issued demolition notices to over 500 owners of illegally constructed structures across Nnewi as part of the state’s urban renewal programme.

Affected structures include shanties built under high-tension power lines, buildings without approved setbacks, unapproved developments, filling stations, hotels, and dilapidated structures considered unsafe.

Leading the enforcement team across key areas of the metropolis, including Onitsha Road, Anaedo Hall Road, Hundred Foot Road, Ezemewi Road, Post Office and Nkwo axis, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Barr. Chijioke Ojukwu, warned against unauthorized property development.

He said owners of the affected structures had been given a two-week ultimatum before demolition begins, explaining that the exercise aligns with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s urban regeneration agenda.

According to Ojukwu, the government plans to transform the Nnewi Triangle area through the completion of the long-abandoned Nnewi Mall, as well as the development of a central bus terminal and recreational facilities.

While acknowledging that the exercise may cause temporary hardship, he urged residents to comply with physical planning regulations, assuring that the initiative is aimed at improving the city’s safety, aesthetics, and overall development.
