The legal team of the incacerated leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has condemned a televised comment allegedly calling for his extrajudicial killing, describing it as reckless, unlawful and a direct threat to his life.
In a press release dated July 21, 2026, signed by Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, Esq., the legal team accused Mr Chigozie Nnabugwu of urging the Federal Government to kill Kanu during a programme aired on News Central Television.
According to the statement, the comment was published on the verified X (formerly Twitter) handle of News Central TV on July 19, 2026, and subsequently went viral.
The legal team argued that the statement constituted a call for extrajudicial killing, warning that it could incite violence and threaten public order.
It maintained that the comment appeared to contravene Section 24(1) of the Cybercrimes Act, which criminalises the intentional transmission of electronic messages that threaten life or are capable of causing a breakdown of law and order.
The lawyers further stated that additional liabilities could arise under the Criminal Code for alleged incitement to violence and related offences.
The statement also accused News Central TV of providing a platform for what it described as inflammatory content without due regard for its potential consequences, warning that the broadcaster could face regulatory sanctions for violating broadcasting codes relating to incitement and public order.
According to the legal team, calls for Kanu’s extrajudicial execution while his case remains before the court amount to an attempt to undermine the judicial process and could constitute contempt of court.
The lawyers disclosed that they were reviewing all available legal options, including filing formal complaints with the appropriate authorities.
They demanded an immediate public retraction from Mr Nnabugwu and an unqualified televised apology from News Central TV for airing the statement.
The press release added that it serves as a pre-action notice, warning that legal proceedings would commence if both Mr. Nnabugwu and News Central TV fail to take immediate remedial measures.
