The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Command, on Wednesday carried out a road safety sensitization campaign for motorists and pedestrians around Regina Caeli Junction in Awka.
The exercise, which also featured free drunk-driving tests for drivers at nearby parks, aimed at reducing road traffic crashes in the state.
Speaking during the campaign, Sector Commander, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno, said the initiative was part of the Corps’ Corporate Social Responsibility and strategic efforts to reduce road crashes by 10 percent.
She said the FRSC observed that many pedestrians struggle to cross the busy highway, stressing the need for proper use of zebra crossings by both motorists and pedestrians.
Asekhauno blamed poor compliance with zebra crossing rules on ignorance and said the Corps was intensifying public enlightenment on road safety measures.
She also revealed that the FRSC had forwarded a memo to the Anambra State Government requesting construction of a pedestrian bridge at the junction to reduce accidents.
According to her, the regular drunk-driving tests conducted in motor parks are meant to ensure drivers are physically and mentally fit before taking to the roads.
Some residents and pedestrians commended the exercise and appealed to the state government to urgently construct a pedestrian bridge at the junction due to frequent accidents and heavy human traffic in the area.
