Europe’s tallest Virgin Mary statue unveiled in tiny polish village

A gigantic statue of the Virgin Mary, believed to be the tallest of its kind in Europe, has been unveiled in the tiny Polish village of Konotopie, attracting hundreds of people to its inauguration.

Standing 55.6 metres (182 feet) high, the monument towers over the rural landscape and is significantly taller than Rio de Janeiro’s famous Christ the Redeemer, which stands about 38 metres (125 feet) including its pedestal.

The statue, dedicated to Our Lady of Mercy, was officially consecrated on Saturday, August 15, coinciding with the Catholic celebration of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

The ceremony featured a Mass celebrated by Catholic clergy, traditional Polish music and a dramatic helicopter display in which miniature red roses were scattered over the crowd. Former Polish president and Nobel Peace Prize winner Lech Wałęsa was among those who attended.

Konotopie, located in central Poland, has a population of fewer than 150 people, making the scale of the monument particularly striking. Local residents hope the statue will transform the quiet village into a major destination for Catholic pilgrims and tourists.

Construction of the concrete monument reportedly took 18 months and cost approximately 100 million Polish zloty (€23.2 million).

The project was privately funded by wealthy Polish couple Roman and Grażyna Karkosik, who described the monument as a votive offering of gratitude to God. The couple reportedly live in a restored 18th-century palace about two kilometres from the statue, from where the monument can be seen.

The statue also features a 15-metre crown-shaped pedestal, which includes a viewing terrace more than 15 metres above the ground.

Taller than Poland’s famous Christ statue
The new Mary monument has also surpassed Poland’s well-known Christ the King statue in Świebodzin, which rises to about 52 metres when its mound and crown are included.

It was designed by sculptor Adam Jakub Matejkowski, who said the original concept began as a two-metre model. According to the sculptor, the Karkosiks specifically wanted the new Mary statue to be larger than the Christ monument in Świebodzin.

However, the Polish statue is not the tallest Virgin Mary monument in the world. That distinction belongs to the approximately 98-metre Mother of All Asia–Tower of Peace in Batangas City, Philippines.

For Wałęsa, the inauguration carried a deeply personal religious meaning. The former president, now 82, said his life’s journey had come full circle, linking his long association with Catholic faith and the Virgin Mary.

The new monument is now expected to become a striking new landmark in Poland and a major pilgrimage site for Catholics from across the country and beyond.
