Renowned human rights lawyer and lead counsel to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has urged Ndigbo to reject any directive calling for electoral boycott in Ala-Igbo.
Ejiofor made the call in his latest Midweek Musings, titled “Ala-Igbo at a Crossroads: Jettisoning Electoral Boycott Before It Becomes Another Tragedy.”
The Anambra-born lawyer warned that electoral boycott could weaken the political influence of the people and expose them to serious economic, social and political consequences.
He said grievances should instead be pursued through constitutional, judicial, political and other legitimate democratic channels.
Ejiofor condemned what he described as attempts to make electoral participation a test of loyalty or patriotism, arguing that such a position could ultimately hurt the same people it claims to defend.
According to him, “Patriotism cannot mean deliberately weakening one’s own people,” while resistance should not involve destroying the economic foundation of the region.
He urged those who genuinely care about Ala-Igbo to protect peace, strengthen democratic institutions and listen to the people.
“We must never again take a route whose destination is devastation,” Ejiofor said, warning against decisions that could inflict long-term consequences on the people.
He maintained that Ala-Igbo had suffered enough and should not become “collateral damage” in another experiment in political absolutism.
