It was an atmosphere of jubilation, thanksgiving and reflection at the weekend as family members, parishioners of St. Peter Claver’s Catholic Parish, Utuh, in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State, friends and well-wishers gathered to celebrate Rev. Fr. Theodore Obiora Uzochukwu on the 25th anniversary of his priestly ordination.
The celebration began with a solemn Holy Mass at the parish, after which guests proceeded to the reception venue, where glowing tributes were offered in honour of the celebrant.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Ignatius Chidebe Offordi, Chairman of the Parish Council, Chairman of the Catholic Community and President of Utuh Development Union, described Fr. Uzochukwu as a priest known for compassion, humility and simplicity.
Offordi said he had learnt valuable lessons from the priest, particularly the virtue of humility, and prayed God to continue to grant him wisdom, strength and protection in his service to the Church.
Speaking at the occasion, Fr. Uzochukwu described the celebration as a unique and significant milestone in his life.
“Today I celebrate 25 years of priestly ordination. I thank God that I am alive to witness the joy of my family, friends, parishioners and all those who wish me well,” he said.
Reflecting on his years in the priesthood, the celebrant recalled that his second year in ministry was particularly challenging, as he encountered a number of crises.
He, however, said he was able to overcome the difficulties through the grace of God.
“Priestly life is a mystery. It is a challenge and, at the same time, an encouragement. We must always look at life from the perspective of eschatology, that after this life, there is another life,” he said.
Fr. Uzochukwu advised newly ordained priests to embrace patience and humility, stressing that being prepared for challenges and placing their trust in God would help them overcome difficulties in ministry.
The priest expressed appreciation to God and everyone who contributed to the success of the silver jubilee celebration.
He particularly thanked the parishioners of St. Peter Claver’s Parish, Utuh, describing his four years with them as peaceful and memorable.
“I am so happy with my parishioners. Wherever I am, I will continue to remember them in my prayers and wish them well,” he added.
The celebration attracted Catholic clergy, traditional rulers, leaders of Catholic organisations, community leaders, family members and other dignitaries from within and outside Anambra State.
