The Labour Party (LP) senatorial candidate for Anambra Central, Ven. Tochukwu Ikezue, has urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to step aside for Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election, saying the decision would immortalise him as a hero of democracy.
Ikezue made the appeal shortly after attending the inauguration of the Women’s Wing of the Urban Community Voters Association of Nigeria (UCVAN) at Ekwulummiri Town Hall, Awada, Obosi, Anambra State.
He said supporting Obi’s presidential ambition would demonstrate Atiku’s commitment to national interest and earn him lasting admiration, particularly among Nigerian youths yearning for a new generation of leadership.
The LP candidate expressed appreciation to the leadership of UCVAN, especially its General Woman Leader, Lady Amaka Reuben, for inviting him and organising what he described as a well-attended and impactful event.
He also commended the African Democratic Congress (ADC) House of Representatives candidate for Idemili North and South Federal Constituency, Hon. Ifebi Nnamdi, for attending the ceremony and demonstrating commitment to women’s empowerment.
Speaking on the 2027 presidential election, Ikezue urged Atiku to rise to the occasion as an elder statesman by supporting Obi, whom he described as possessing the qualities required to lead Nigeria at this critical period.
He expressed concern that Nigeria had yet to produce a president born after the country’s independence in 1960, arguing that the situation reflected the persistent recycling of political leadership and the limited opportunities available to younger generations to occupy the nation’s highest office.
According to him, Nigeria’s youthful population deserves a greater opportunity to participate in national leadership, stressing that the country needs leaders capable of responding to the aspirations of its citizens.
Ikezue described Obi as a credible and competent candidate, citing his commitment, character, capacity and compassion as qualities that distinguish him.
“If Alhaji Atiku Abubakar steps up and supports Peter Obi, history will forever be kind to him. It will endear him to the Nigerian youths forever as a selfless statesman,” Ikezue said.
He added that such a decision would help create opportunities for younger generations, including Atiku’s own children, to aspire to the presidency in the future.
The senatorial candidate called on patriotic elders across political divides to put national interest above partisan considerations and support what he described as the movement for a new Nigeria.
He maintained that the 2027 presidential election presented an opportunity for political leaders to demonstrate selflessness and place the country’s future above personal ambition.
At the UCVAN event, Ikezue also praised the association’s Women’s Wing for promoting women’s participation and empowerment, commending its leadership for taking steps to strengthen women’s involvement in community and national development.
