COMMENTARY: Speed, Chaos And Silence: How Izuchukwu Junction Is Turning Into A Death Trap In Nnewi”

By David Onwuchekwa, Nnewi

Izuchukwu Junction is fast becoming a symbol of poor traffic discipline and weak enforcement, despite its strategic importance in connecting major routes like Nnobi Road, Igwe Orizu Road, Nkwo Nnewi Roundabout, and the axis leading to First Bank.

What should be a smooth-flowing intersection has instead turned into a daily gamble with life.

The recent dualization of the road, meant to ease congestion and improve mobility, has ironically created an avenue for reckless speed. Drivers, along with motorcycle and tricycle operators, treat the stretch like a race track, ignoring basic road safety rules. The result is a chaotic mix of high-speed vehicles converging from multiple directions without coordination.

Even the presence of officials from Anambra Road Transport Management Agency appears insufficient. Their intermittent control efforts are overwhelmed by the sheer volume of traffic and the disregard for authority by many road users.

This raises a deeper issue: enforcement without consistency loses its effectiveness.

What is happening at Izuchukwu Junction is not just a traffic problem, it is a public safety crisis waiting to escalate further if nothing is done.

What Should Be Done:

First, there must be permanent traffic control measures, not occasional interventions. Deploying officers in shifts to ensure 24/7 monitoring would significantly reduce the current disorder.

Second, the government should install traffic lights and clearly marked lane indicators. A junction of that magnitude cannot rely solely on human control, especially with increasing traffic volume.

Third, speed calming mechanisms such as speed bumps, rumble strips, and warning signage should be introduced before vehicles approach the junction. The current design encourages speed rather than caution.

Fourth, there is a need for strict enforcement and penalties. Reckless driving, illegal turns, and disobedience to traffic officers should attract immediate sanctions to serve as deterrents.

Finally, public awareness campaigns must be intensified. Many road users underestimate the consequences of their actions. Education, alongside enforcement, is key to lasting behavioral change.

Until these steps are taken seriously, Izuchukwu Junction will remain a danger zone, one where every crossing comes with unnecessary risk. The time to act is now, before more lives are lost.
