COMMENTARY: Avoiding Traffic Jams In Nnewi This Christmas Season

 By David Onwuchekwa

As the Christmas season approaches, Nnewi is once again set to experience a surge in human and vehicular movement.

Homecomings, festive shopping, church programmes and social events traditionally put immense pressure on the town’s already busy road network. Without deliberate efforts by both authorities and residents, traffic congestion could dampen the joy of the season.

To avoid traffic jams, proactive traffic management is essential. The Nnewi North and South Local Government Authorities, in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), police and traffic wardens, should deploy officers to major flashpoints such as Nkwo Nnewi Roundabout, Izuchukwu Junction, Nwafor Orizu Road, Owerri Road, Ibeto Junction, Traffic Light and other commercial hubs.

Proper coordination and presence at peak hours will ensure free flow of traffic and quick response to bottlenecks.

Equally important is the enforcement of traffic rules. Illegal parking, roadside trading, and indiscriminate loading and unloading of passengers are major causes of gridlock in Nnewi.

Motorists should be compelled to park only in designated areas, while traders must keep walkways and road shoulders clear. Commercial drivers, especially tricycle and shuttle bus operators, should avoid stopping at will on highways to pick passengers.

Residents also have a role to play. People should plan their movements ahead of time, avoid unnecessary trips during peak hours, and embrace walking for short distances where possible.

Churches, event organisers and market leaders should stagger programme times and encourage orderly parking arrangements to prevent roads from being blocked during large gatherings.

Furthermore, temporary traffic diversions and clear signposts should be introduced in areas undergoing heavy congestion, especially around markets and event centres.

Public enlightenment through radio announcements and community leaders will help sensitize residents on alternative routes and expected traffic patterns.

A congestion-free Christmas in Nnewi is achievable, if government agencies, road users and residents work together. With discipline, planning and effective traffic control, Nnewi can enjoy a peaceful, safe and joyful festive season without the frustration of traffic jams.
