The Anambra State Government has demolished a three-storey building that collapsed while under construction in Umuoji, Idemili North Local Government Area.
The structure, located in Umuoma Village, reportedly collapsed on May 18 without causing any casualties. Following technical assessments, the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development declared the building unsafe and ordered its demolition.
Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Barr. Chijioke Ojukwu, said the action was necessary to protect lives and property and to enforce compliance with building regulations.
According to preliminary findings, the collapse was linked to poor construction practices and the use of substandard materials.
The commissioner also disclosed that the project lacked necessary approvals and violated planning regulations.
Ojukwu warned developers and contractors to adhere strictly to approved standards, adding that the government is considering tougher sanctions, including criminal penalties, for violations.
He urged builders to engage qualified professionals and comply with all regulatory requirements to prevent future incidents.
