Tension is rising in Umuchukwu/Nkerehi community in Anambra State over a disputed traditional stool, with fears of a possible crisis if the situation is not properly managed.

The conflict centres on the selection of a new traditional ruler, with allegations that some influential figures are attempting to impose a candidate on the community.

Key individuals mentioned in the dispute include the President General, Emeka Adunchezor, Barrister Kenneth Maduka, Dr Godwin Maduka, and Hon Emeka Onwusoronye.

Adunchezor has reportedly remained silent despite repeated attempts by journalists to reach him. Meanwhile, some community members have accused certain stakeholders of trying to sideline due process, including the alleged abandonment of the community’s rotational system for selecting a traditional ruler.

Hon Onwusoronye, a university lecturer and one of the contenders, has taken legal steps to halt the process, insisting on fairness and transparency. A court order dated March 31, 2026, has suspended the Igweship selection pending further hearing.

He has also called on Governor Charles Soludo to intervene, warning that the situation could escalate if not resolved through dialogue.

Some residents have expressed concern that any attempt to impose a ruler or alter established traditions could lead to unrest within the community.
