A Nigerian fishing community is gradually disappearing into the Atlantic Ocean as rising sea levels, coastal erosion and increasingly powerful waves threaten homes, livelihoods and the future of residents.
The community of Ayetoro, in Ondo State, southwestern Nigeria, has for years battled the relentless advance of the ocean. Once a thriving fishing settlement, large portions of the community have now been swallowed by the sea.
Residents have watched helplessly as houses, roads and other structures close to the shoreline were destroyed by advancing waves.
The encroaching Atlantic has also dealt a heavy blow to fishing, the community’s traditional economic mainstay. As the coastline retreats, fishermen are finding it increasingly difficult to maintain their livelihoods while families are being forced to abandon ancestral homes.
Ayetoro’s predicament illustrates the growing vulnerability of Nigeria’s coastal communities to climate change and coastal degradation.
The Atlantic’s advance is being driven by a combination of natural coastal processes and human-induced environmental changes.
Rising sea levels linked to global warming are increasing the pressure on low-lying communities, while stronger waves and coastal erosion continue to remove land.
For residents, however, the crisis is not an abstract climate-change debate. It is an immediate threat to their homes, businesses, culture and survival.
Community members have repeatedly called for government intervention, including measures to protect the shoreline and provide assistance to displaced residents.
The disappearance of Ayetoro also raises wider concerns about Nigeria’s coastline, where numerous communities depend on fishing and other coastal activities for their survival.
Environmental experts have warned that without effective coastal management and adaptation measures, more communities could face similar threats in the years ahead.
For Ayetoro’s residents, every advancing wave represents another piece of their community being lost to the Atlantic.
The once-thriving fishing settlement is therefore confronting a stark question: how long can a community survive when the land beneath it is steadily disappearing?
