The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Anambra State Chapter, has honoured the Chief Medical Director of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Amaku, Awka, Dr. Maureen Uche Umeakuewulu, with its Meritorious Service Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the medical profession and transformative leadership at the hospital.
The award was presented during the NMA event held at Chunique Royal Hotel, Nnewi.
Receiving the award, Dr. Umeakuewulu thanked Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo for the opportunity to serve as COOUTH’s Chief Medical Director.
She also expressed gratitude to her mentors, especially Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu, and acknowledged the contributions of her predecessor, Hon. Dr. Joe Akabuike.
She described the award as both a recognition of her service and a motivation to further strengthen healthcare delivery, medical education, and patient care. She reaffirmed her commitment to supporting the NMA and promoting ethical medical practice and professional development.
Dr. Umeakuewulu highlighted key reforms at COOUTH, including the ongoing digitalization of hospital operations, smart patient identification cards, improved infrastructure, enhanced security, and other initiatives aimed at positioning the hospital as a leading centre for quality healthcare, research, and specialist training.
The ceremony was attended by prominent medical professionals, academics, and dignitaries, including the Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof. Stanley Ugochukwu Bond Anyaehie, former Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu, and former COOUTH Chief Medical Director, Hon. Dr. Joe Akabuike.
