The Labour Party (LP) Senatorial candidate for Anambra Central, Ven. Tochukwu Ikezue, and the party’s House of Representatives candidate for Anaocha, Njikoka and Dunukofia Federal Constituency, Dr. Mrs. Mary Ifeoma Obi-Okoye, have received the backing of Anglican women in the Diocese of Awka.
The endorsement came during the 40th Awka Diocesan Women’s Conference (ADWOC) and the 3rd Diocesan Mothers’ Union Conference, where the candidates received a warm reception from participants.
Speaking at the event, Archbishop of the Province of the Niger and Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Alexander Ibezim, welcomed the candidates and prayed for God’s guidance as they seek elective offices. He described Ikezue as a respected clergy-turned-politician committed to servant leadership.
The Archbishop’s wife and President of the Mothers’ Union and Women’s Guild, Dr. Mrs. Martha Chioma Ibezim, also offered prayers for the candidates.
Addressing the gathering, Ikezue commended the Diocese for its support for indigent members and urged the women to emulate the legacy of Mothers’ Union founder, Mary Sumner, in promoting Christian family values.
Obi-Okoye, who also serves as Coordinator of the Ladies Knight of the Diocese on the Niger, pledged greater opportunities for women if elected. She encouraged women to leverage their numerical strength to support female candidates and end the culture of discouraging women in politics.
