Anambra State Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Ben Chuks Odoemena, says many Nigerian farmers remain frustrated because they approach farming as a means of subsistence rather than as a business.
Speaking at the flag-off of the 2026 farming season in Orumba North Local Government Area, Odoemena urged farmers to adopt a market-driven approach by producing crops based on demand.
“When we see farming as a business, we farm for the market, not just for the stomach,” he said.
The commissioner said Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration is committed to transforming Anambra into a hub for agribusiness through private sector partnerships, irrigation-driven farming and competitive agricultural value chains.
He called on local governments, community leaders and farmer groups to partner with the state to boost agricultural productivity.
Orumba North Mayor, Rt. Capt. Casmir Nwafor (rtd), said the council has continued to support farmers with improved farm inputs, training for youths and women, and plans to establish a model farm institute and a vegetable farm.
The event featured the distribution of improved cassava stems, maize seeds and rodent-control chemicals to farmers ahead of the 2026 farming season.
