Pope Leo XIV has urged citizens, leaders, and institutions in Acerra, southern Italy, to take greater responsibility in protecting life and the environment in the polluted region known as the “Land of Fires.”
Speaking during a pastoral visit to the area, the Pope said communities must reject resignation and work together to promote justice, environmental protection, and the common good.
He noted that the region has suffered greatly from pollution and illegal waste activities over the years, with many families losing loved ones and children affected by related illnesses.
The Pope stressed that true renewal would require moral, civic, and educational transformation, calling on both young and old to embrace responsibility and solidarity.
Referencing Laudato si’, Pope Leo warned against economic practices driven by greed and environmental destruction, while encouraging residents to safeguard creation and build a better future for coming generations.
He also praised individuals and groups who have spoken out against environmental crimes in the region despite challenges and threats.
