The National Orientation Agency (NOA), Anambra State Directorate, and the World Health Organization (WHO), Anambra State Office, have agreed to collaborate in combating the spread of HIV/AIDS in the state.
The State Director of NOA, Barr. Lady Ifeoma Chijioke, disclosed this during a visit by management staff of the Agency to the WHO State Coordinator, Dr. Bonos Mohammed, in Awka.
Chijioke expressed concern over the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the country, noting that available statistics placed Anambra fifth among states with the highest prevalence.
She said NOA would leverage its ongoing Community Engagement Programme across the 788 communities in the state to create awareness on HIV/AIDS and its prevention.
“NOA is ready to partner with WHO in the fight against this scourge in the state. All we are asking for is for you to make your educational materials available to our Agency for our awareness programmes,” she said.
Responding, Mohammed described the visit as timely and urged NOA to develop a functional work plan to guide the partnership.
He said the state government had established an agency responsible for HIV/AIDS management, noting that its mandate aligns with NOA’s awareness and community engagement activities.
