A 35-year-old Ethiopian woman, Bedriya Adem, has given birth to rare quintuplets after spending 12 years hoping and praying for a child.
Bedriya, according to NBC, delivered four boys and one girl through Caesarean section at Hiwot Fana Specialised Hospital. Doctors confirmed that both the mother and the babies are healthy and receiving medical care.
The babies, who weighed between 1.3kg and 1.4kg at birth, were named Naif, Ammar, Munzir, Nazira, and Ansar.
According to the hospital’s medical director, Dr Mohammed Nur Abdulahi, the pregnancy happened naturally without the aid of IVF treatment, making the birth extremely rare.
Bedriya described the birth of the quintuplets as a miracle after years of emotional pain and pressure from people in her community over her inability to have children.
“I prayed for just one child, and Allah gave me five,” she said joyfully.
The first-time mother said she and her husband are grateful despite concerns about caring for the enlarged family. She expressed hope that support from the community and government would help them raise the children.
Medical experts say naturally conceived quintuplets are extremely uncommon worldwide.
