The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Anambra State chapter, will on Friday honour the Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof. Ugochukwu Anyaehie, the Chief Medical Director of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Dr. Maureen Umeakuewulu, and the immediate past Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Prof. Ogochukwu Ezejiofor.
The honour is said to be in recognition of their outstanding contributions to healthcare and medical education.
The awards will be presented during the association’s 2026 Annual General Meeting, Scientific Conference and 6th Emeritus Professor Festus Aghagbo Nwako Memorial Lecture, scheduled for Friday, July 17, 2026, in Nnewi, Anambra State.
In a statement jointly signed by the NMA State Chairman, Dr. Princeston Okam, and the Publicity Secretary, Dr. Ahoma Mbanuzuru, the association disclosed that this year’s conference is themed: “The Future of Medicine in Nigeria: Doctors as System Architects; Innovation, Workforce Sustainability and Universal Health Survival.”
According to the statement, the event will also feature a sub-theme: “Medicine Under Pressure: Insecurity, Violence Against Healthcare Workers, Workforce Migration and the Struggle for Healthcare Survival,” highlighting the critical challenges confronting Nigeria’s healthcare sector.
The conference, which will be chaired by Prof. Alexander Nwofor, is expected to bring together doctors, medical students, researchers, healthcare professionals and key stakeholders to deliberate on innovative strategies for strengthening the nation’s healthcare system and securing its future.
