Residents of Umusiome Community, Nkpor, in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State have appealed to Governor Chukwuma Soludo to urgently intervene in the worsening erosion and flooding threatening lives, homes and public infrastructure.
The residents called on the Commissioner for Works, Arc. Okey Ezeobi, and the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, to inspect the flood-ravaged Ogbeudo Road and the gully erosion site within Government Technical College (GTC), Nkpor.
Speaking during the inspection, community leaders said they had spent millions of naira on self-help efforts to control the flooding, but the roads had deteriorated beyond what the community could manage.
Responding, Ezeobi assured the residents that the affected area had been captured for intervention under the Soludo administration’s ongoing road projects.
He also urged residents, especially traders, to comply with tax obligations, explaining that government projects are funded with taxpayers’ money.
Environment Commissioner Aguiyi blamed indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainages for worsening the flooding and erosion.
He urged residents to dispose of waste properly and identify structures blocking natural water channels to reduce flood risks.
Students of Government Technical College, Nkpor, also appealed to the state government to urgently protect their school from the advancing gully erosion, warning that the damaged perimeter fence and expanding erosion now pose a serious danger to students and staff.
