The leadership of the Igbodike Movement, an Igbo socio-political organisation with Mr Peter Nwankwo as the National Co-ordinator, has commended the National Assembly, particularly the Senate, for passing the bill seeking the establishment of a state police system in Nigeria.
According to the Movement, the passage of the bill marks a historic milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey and represents one of the landmark achievements of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in addressing the country’s security challenges.
State Police Will Strengthen National Security
The Movement noted that President Tinubu inherited a deeply troubled security architecture that posed enormous challenges to governance. It described his commitment to decentralising policing through the establishment of state police as bold, visionary and worthy of national commendation.
Igbodike Movement maintained that state police would significantly improve security by empowering states to tackle criminal activities and security threats within their respective territories.
This, it said, would ensure quicker response times, more effective crime prevention and enhanced public safety.
Closer Community Relationship, Better Accountability
The organisation further observed that state police would strengthen community policing by creating stronger relationships between security personnel and the people they serve, owing to their better understanding of local cultures, languages and environments.
It added that the new policing structure would allow states to deploy resources according to their peculiar security needs, resulting in more efficient and targeted law enforcement.
The Movement also stressed that state police would improve accountability, as local communities and state authorities would have greater oversight over police operations, thereby reducing cases of abuse, misconduct and unprofessional conduct.
Reducing Political Interference
According to the group, decentralising policing would minimise excessive political interference from the federal level, thereby promoting the independence, effectiveness and professionalism of state police formations across the federation.
Support for Tinubu’s Re-election
The Igbodike Movement reaffirmed its commitment to mobilising and sensitising people across the South-East and South-South geopolitical zones to support the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.
The group said the endorsement is based on what it described as the President’s landmark achievements and developmental projects, insisting that his administration should continue until 2031 to consolidate ongoing reforms and national development.
