Ronaldo breaks silence on retirement after Portugal’s World Cup exit

Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup was his final appearance at football’s biggest tournament but says he is yet to decide when to retire from the game entirely.

The 41-year-old made the announcement after Portugal’s 1-0 Round of 16 defeat to Spain, bringing an end to his record-breaking sixth World Cup campaign.

“I’ve given everything, I’ve given my best, and I leave with a clear conscience,” Ronaldo said after the match.

“This was my last World Cup, but everything else I’ll have time to think about with my family before making any decision.”

Despite Portugal’s elimination, Ronaldo added another milestone to his illustrious career by becoming the only player to score in six consecutive FIFA World Cups. He also remains international football’s all-time leading scorer with 146 goals.

Ronaldo came close to scoring against Spain, but goalkeeper Unai Simón produced outstanding saves to deny him.

Portugal coach Roberto Martínez paid glowing tribute to the veteran forward, describing him as “a football icon” and an inspiration to generations of players.

Although Ronaldo never lifted the FIFA World Cup trophy, he captained Portugal to victory at the 2016 UEFA European Championship and also won the UEFA

tions League titles in 2019 and 2025.
