Youths in Owerri Municipal Local Government Area of Imo State have expressed concern over the high cost of nomination forms for elective offices, describing it as a major obstacle preventing many capable young people from participating in politics.
The concern was raised during a Local Government Quarterly Dialogue Session organised by the Catch Them Young Community Initiative (CATYCOI).
Speaking at the event, a participant, Mr. George, questioned government’s commitment to youth inclusion, saying exorbitant nomination fees discourage young people from seeking elective positions.
He also raised concerns over election manipulation and worsening insecurity, calling for transparent elections and stronger collaboration between communities and security agencies.
Other participants highlighted poor environmental sanitation, inadequate waste management and irregular electricity supply, urging government to improve waste collection, provide accurate information on power projects and strengthen public services.
Responding, the Director of Youth in the Imo State Ministry of Youth, Mr. Iheanacho, commended participants for their contributions and assured them that the issues raised would be forwarded to the appropriate authorities.
He noted that political parties, not government, determine the cost of nomination forms, but encouraged young people to remain active in civic and political processes despite existing challenges.
Earlier, CATYCOI Executive Director, Nonso Orakwe, said the dialogue was organised to promote citizen participation in governance by providing a platform for youths, persons with disabilities and civil society groups to engage directly with government officials.
Participants called for improved waste management, enhanced security, better electricity infrastructure and measures to reduce barriers to youth participation in politics.
