The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has placed the country on high alert over the risk of Ebola Virus Disease importation following fresh outbreaks in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Director-General of the agency, Dr Jide Idris, said no confirmed Ebola case has been recorded in Nigeria, but surveillance and emergency response systems have been activated nationwide.
According to the NCDC, international travel, porous borders and delayed symptom recognition increase Nigeria’s vulnerability to the disease.
Vanguard reports that the agency said monitoring has been intensified at airports, border communities and health facilities, while Rapid Response Teams have been placed on standby across the country.
Healthcare workers are also receiving refresher training on Ebola detection and infection prevention measures.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government said no Ebola case has been detected in the state but confirmed that surveillance and border screening have been strengthened.
Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, urged residents to remain calm and report any suspected symptoms promptly.
