Operatives of the Zone 2 Command of the Nigeria Police Force have uncovered a major drug trafficking syndicate in Lagos, recovering suspected illicit drugs valued at about ₦7.8 billion and arresting several suspects, including alleged kingpin, Eke Henry Ifeanyi.
The operation was carried out by officers of the Special Protection Unit (SPU) in collaboration with divisional detectives after months of surveillance and intelligence gathering coordinated by the Zone 2 Headquarters.
Police said the raid took place at an apartment in Mende, Maryland, Lagos, where hundreds of bags of suspected Canadian Loud were recovered.
Addressing journalists, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2, AIG Olohundare Jimoh, disclosed that the suspect was arrested on May 19 following weeks of monitoring by operatives.
According to him, the suspect allegedly offered ₦500 million bribe to the SPU commander in a bid to compromise the operation and allow the drug consignment to be moved, but the offer was rejected and documented.
Jimoh described the development as evidence of growing professionalism and discipline within the Force, noting that the operation highlighted the importance of intelligence-led policing and collaboration between specialized units and divisional teams.
“The professionalism shown by the operatives, especially the immediate rejection of the bribe, reflects the standard expected from officers,” he said.
Reacting to the development, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, commended the operatives for their conduct and assured that integrity and accountability would continue to be rewarded within the Force.
Police authorities added that the recovered exhibits have been documented and would be presented in court, while investigations continue to track down other members of the syndicate.
