The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria has expressed concern over the low number of women in judicial leadership positions despite increasing female participation in the legal profession.
Speaking in Awka during a consultative dialogue with women judicial officers, FIDA National Publicity Secretary, Chineze Obianyo, representing Country Vice President/National President, Mrs. Eliana Martins, said the programme aimed at promoting women’s inclusion in the judiciary through institutional reforms.
She noted that although Nigeria had produced notable female judicial leaders, women remained under-represented in top positions, with only four of the 13 Supreme Court justices being women.
Obianyo blamed the imbalance on socio-cultural bias, workplace discrimination and limited leadership opportunities for women.
Anambra FIDA Chairperson, Amara Muojeke, said Anambra and Ebonyi states were selected for the five-year Co-Impact-supported project aimed at improving women’s representation in the judiciary.
She disclosed that Anambra has only five female High Court judges out of 29 judges in the state.
