Human rights lawyer and counsel to IPOB, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has expressed deep concern over the rising wave of deadly attacks linked to armed groups commonly described as herdsmen across Nigeria.
In a strongly worded statement, Ejiofor said what was once perceived as isolated or localized clashes has now evolved into a full-blown national security crisis cutting across several states. He pointed to repeated assaults on rural communities, destruction of farmlands, loss of lives, and the displacement of residents as clear signs of a worsening situation.
He stressed that the pattern of attacks suggests a level of coordination and boldness that should no longer be ignored, warning that treating the crisis lightly would amount to a dangerous misjudgment.
Ejiofor also cautioned against the growing trend of communities issuing ultimatums to attackers, noting that such actions, without adequate security structures in place, could create a false sense of safety.
According to him, violent groups do not operate with warnings and often exploit vulnerable areas.
While acknowledging the frustration and fear among affected communities, he emphasized the need for strategic, lawful, and intelligence-driven responses rather than reactive measures.
The lawyer further called for stronger inter-regional and cross-border security collaboration, noting that insecurity in one region can easily spread to others if left unchecked.
He urged government at all levels to act decisively, avoid politicizing the crisis, and prioritize the protection of lives and property, warning that the continued spread of violence poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s unity and stability.
