Human rights lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor has condemned what he described as the growing trend of lawyers abandoning professionalism for political convenience and public theatrics.
In a weekend reflection titled “The Republic of Double-Speakers: When Lawyers Become Merchants of Convenience and Integrity Is Auctioned for Political Crumbs,” Ejiofor said some legal practitioners now behave like “motor-park agitators” by hurling insults and spreading propaganda to gain political relevance.
He explained that while lawyers are free to change political alliances, they must not sacrifice integrity, consistency, and intellectual honesty for political appointments or personal gain.
Ejiofor also criticized politicians and public commentators who once attacked certain political figures but later aligned with them after the 2023 general elections.
He cited figures such as Daniel Bwala, Reno Omokri, and Kenneth Okonkwo as examples of what he called “political convenience.”
According to him, the Nigerian Bar Association must urgently introduce ethical reforms to restore dignity and discipline within the legal profession.
