There are leaders who govern, and there are leaders who build. Then there is Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR—the economist, statesman and visionary whose stewardship of Anambra State is redefining what purposeful leadership can achieve.
As Governor Soludo marks his 66th birthday on July 28, 2026, it is fitting to celebrate a leader whose intellect, courage and foresight are reshaping the destiny of Anambra and setting new standards for governance in Nigeria.
To understand Governor Soludo is to understand a leader who thinks beyond election cycles. He plans in decades, not years. Long before assuming office on March 17, 2022, he had envisioned Anambra as a prosperous, livable and globally competitive homeland.
Where many saw insecurity, decaying infrastructure and economic stagnation, he saw enormous possibilities waiting to be unlocked through visionary leadership.
This philosophy has defined every step of his administration. A renowned economist and former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Soludo brought to public service an uncommon blend of academic excellence, strategic thinking and practical execution. Every policy is deliberately crafted, every project carefully designed to create lasting impact.
Restoring Security, Restoring Hope
Governor Soludo understood from the outset that no meaningful development could thrive in an atmosphere of fear and insecurity.
His administration responded decisively through the enactment of the Anambra Homeland Security Law 2025 and the launch of the 2,000-strong Udo Ga-Achi security operation. By integrating the military, police and other security agencies with the Agunechemba community vigilante network, the state established a robust security architecture rooted in both professional expertise and grassroots intelligence.
The results have been remarkable. Criminal activities have declined significantly, with more than 62 criminal camps dismantled since the administration came on board.
The dreaded sit-at-home disruption that once crippled economic and social life across the South East has also been substantially curtailed.
Revolutionising Education
Governor Soludo’s passion for education reflects his conviction that human capital remains the greatest asset of any society.
His administration introduced free education from kindergarten through secondary school while abolishing hidden fees and levies. More than 8,115 teachers have been recruited, while 22 smart schools are already operational across the state.
The outcomes are evident. Literacy and numeracy levels have risen by over 40 percent, school enrolment has increased by more than 45 percent, and Anambra now records the lowest number of out-of-school children in Nigeria.
These achievements are the product of deliberate planning and sustained investment.
Building Tomorrow’s Anambra Today
Across the state, Governor Soludo’s vision is visible in roads, bridges and modern public infrastructure.
Over 900 kilometres of roads are under construction, with more than 600 kilometres already completed within just 44 months—an average of about 12 kilometres of quality roads every month.
Signature projects such as the Ekwulobia Flyover, the Aroma Link Bridge and the new Light House Government House have transformed the state’s physical landscape.
Beyond these, landmark projects including the Solution Fun City in Awka—West Africa’s largest leisure and entertainment complex—the proposed five-star hotel, continental shopping mall, Agulu Lake Beach Resort, Awka City Park, Anambra Mixed-Use Industrial City, three new urban centres and a comprehensive Rail Masterplan all point to an ambitious vision for the future.
Healthcare with a Human Face
Governor Soludo’s healthcare reforms demonstrate his belief that quality healthcare is a fundamental right.
His administration has rehabilitated 130 Primary Healthcare Centres and built five new general hospitals. Forty ambulance stations now support emergency healthcare delivery across the state, while over 1,500 health workers have been recruited.
Healthcare services have also embraced digital innovation through telemedicine, while free antenatal care and childbirth continue to improve maternal and child healthcare.
The administration’s long-term ambition is to position Anambra as a leading medical destination comparable to India.
Empowering the Economy
Rather than promote dependency, Governor Soludo has focused on empowering businesses and creating opportunities.
Through the Anambra State Small Business Agency, over ₦1.5 billion has been disbursed as highly subsidised loans to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.
The Solution Innovation District has trained more than 20,000 young people in digital skills through partnerships with organisations such as Microsoft and Wootlab Foundation, positioning Anambra as one of Africa’s emerging technology hubs.
Eighty startups have equally benefited from funding support, while the One-Youth-Two-Skills initiative continues to equip thousands of young people with practical vocational and entrepreneurial skills.
Rebuilding Society Through Values
Governor Soludo’s transformation agenda extends beyond physical infrastructure.
His administration has championed a value reorientation campaign inspired by the enduring Igbo philosophy that hard work brings reward. The initiative seeks to discourage criminality, fraudulent wealth acquisition, fake religious practices and native doctor quackery while promoting integrity, enterprise and responsible citizenship.
It represents a determined effort to rebuild not only the state’s infrastructure but also its moral foundation.
Leadership Beyond Politics
One of Governor Soludo’s defining qualities is his ability to rise above partisan politics.
Although a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), he has maintained constructive collaboration with President Bola Tinubu’s administration in advancing projects of national importance, including the Second Niger Bridge access road.
His leadership reflects a commitment to the overall development of Anambra, the Southeast and Nigeria, placing governance above political divisions.
The Vision Becoming Reality
What critics once dismissed as an unrealistic dream of making Anambra the “Dubai-Taiwan of Africa” is steadily taking shape.
The transformation is visible in expanding road networks, modern schools, improved healthcare facilities, thriving businesses, technology-driven innovation and renewed public confidence.
The 2026 budget of ₦757.9 billion—with nearly 79 percent dedicated to capital projects—alongside a disciplined approach that avoids unnecessary borrowing, further demonstrates the administration’s commitment to building enduring prosperity rather than pursuing short-term gains.
As Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo celebrates his 66th birthday, Anambra stands on the threshold of a remarkable future. His first term laid solid foundations; his second term promises to accelerate the transformation.
Today, the state celebrates not merely a birthday, but a leader whose scholarship has become service, whose vision has become reality, and whose legacy is steadily taking shape in every community across Anambra.
