Anambra-born human rights lawyer and lead counsel to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has renewed his commitment to humanitarian and pro bono legal services, particularly the defence of vulnerable persons.
Ejiofor made the pledge in a statement titled, “An Award of Gratitude, A Moment of Reflection, and a Renewed Call to Service,” issued on Wednesday after a group he described as “ezigbo ụmụ Chineke” visited him in Abuja to honour him for his legal services.
Reflecting on the award, Ejiofor said the recognition went beyond the material value of the token presented to him, describing it as a reminder that sacrifices made in the service of others were not forgotten.
He said his professional journey had involved defending oppressed and vulnerable people, including IPOB members, adding that the recognition encouraged him to remain committed to justice and humanitarian causes.
Ejiofor, who holds the traditional title of Dunu-Ezeugosinachi, said the experience also prompted reflection on the challenges facing the South-East and the need for wisdom, civility and commitment to peaceful engagement.
He cautioned that no cause, however noble, could survive the abandonment of its principles or disregard for human life, urging stakeholders to avoid actions capable of worsening tensions and endangering innocent people.
The lawyer expressed gratitude to Mazi Chika Edoziem and the Directorate of State (DOS) for what he described as their courage and sacrifices in the Biafran struggle.
He said his continued prayer was for peace, justice and stability in the South-East, while reaffirming his determination to contribute, within the limits of his profession and conscience, to humanitarian and pro bono causes.
“I received this award with profound gratitude, humility and every sense of appreciation. I acknowledge it not as a celebration of an individual, but as a solemn reminder of the responsibility that accompanies service to humanity,” Ejiofor said.
He thanked the group for the honour and attributed his survival and achievements through difficult periods to God, offering prayers for the healing and restoration of the land.
