As the 2027 general elections draw closer, the political space in the South-East is already witnessing the emergence of individuals presenting themselves as political leaders and claiming ownership of the region’s political future.
But true leadership, whether political, religious or traditional, is not built overnight. Great leaders pass through stages of service, experience, sacrifice and tested commitment before rising to positions of authority.
That is why the South-East must be wary of political opportunists who suddenly emerge into the limelight simply because they have the financial capacity to influence people or attempt to buy their way into political relevance.
Senator Engr. David Umahi stands in a different class.
He is, without doubt, a political encyclopedia whose political journey was built from the grassroots. Umahi did not emerge from nowhere. He passed through the practical academy of party politics, serving as a State Deputy Chairman before becoming the substantive State Chairman of his party.
He subsequently became Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State and later rose to the position of Executive Governor of the state.
His political journey continued to the National Assembly, where he was elected a Distinguished Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, before his appointment as the Minister of Works of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
For a politician who has contested and won several elections across his political career, the record speaks not only to his political capacity but also to the confidence and trust reposed in him by his people.
It is rare in Nigerian politics to witness such a steady progression through the political ladder, particularly the transition from Deputy Governor to Governor and subsequently to the Senate and Federal Executive Council.
We must give it to Senator David Umahi: he is a complete Democrat and a grassroots general.
As a leader, Umahi understands that democracy thrives on freedom of choice, freedom of association and freedom of opinion. He believes that political differences should not automatically translate into personal hostility or persecution.
A great leader should not be threatened by divergent opinions. Rather, he should have the maturity and confidence to accommodate different perspectives, knowing that democracy is strengthened by diversity of thought.
As the 2027 elections approach, the people of the South-East must remain vigilant and distinguish genuine leadership from political opportunism.
The region does not need leaders who believe that political leadership is their personal entitlement. It needs leaders with experience, capacity, democratic credentials and a proven record of service.
The time has come for the South-East to make informed choices and support leaders who understand the complexities of politics and governance.
Senator Engr. David Umahi is one of those leaders whose political journey, experience and record deserve serious consideration as the region looks towards 2027.
