Elders and youths of Mmimi Communal Union in Nawfia, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State have protested against the alleged illegal sale of communal land by some union executives.
The protesters, who marched to the Njikoka Local Government headquarters, accused the union leadership led by Mr. Anayo Okongwu and Mr. Chido Nwankwo of selling the Ezi Ebenebe communal land without the consent of the five kindreds in the community.
They called on the State Governor, Charles Soludo and the council authorities to investigate the matter and halt further sales pending proper inquiry.
Former union chairman, Chief Gabriel Okonkwo, alleged that the land, originally reserved for community projects, was being sold illegally by some individuals who took over the union leadership.
Spokesperson of the elders, Chief Goddy Achebe, said the union’s constitution requires approval from at least four of the five kindreds before any communal property can be sold, insisting that due process was ignored.
The youth chairman, Mr. Chinedu Ekwunife, vowed to work with the community to recover lands allegedly sold unlawfully.
Responding to the protesters, Njikoka Mayor, Barr. Ononuba Chinedu, assured that the council would investigate the allegations and hear from all parties involved.
However, union chairman, Anayo Okongwu, denied the allegations, insisting that due process was followed and that proceeds from the land sales were used for community development.
He also said that a court had already ruled in favour of the union leadership.
