The Executive Director of the Gender Empowerment and Rights Initiative Foundation (GERIF), Hon. Ify Obinabo, has urged women, particularly mothers, to prioritise sound parenting, strong family values and responsible womanhood in building a morally upright society.

Obinabo made the call while serving as a special guest at the August meeting of the Awka Catholic Women Organisation of the Catholic Diocese of Awka.

She described the family as the foundation of society and explained that mothers have a strategic role in shaping the character, discipline and future of their children.

The former Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare urged mothers to be intentional about parenting, especially amid growing social media influence and peer pressure.

She advised them to create time to listen to their children, understand their challenges and provide moral guidance, discipline and emotional support.

Obinabo also cautioned women against excessive involvement in social clubs and organisations, noting that while such groups promote networking and community development, too many engagements could affect family responsibilities.

“Women should be careful not to allow social engagements to take the place of their primary responsibilities as mothers and wives,” she advised.

She urged women to be selective about the organisations they join and consider the financial, emotional and time commitments involved.

Obinabo further called for greater cooperation between husbands and wives in raising responsible children, while encouraging the Catholic women to promote peace, charity, education and the welfare of vulnerable people.

She said GERIF remained committed to advancing the rights and empowerment of women and vulnerable groups.

Obinabo concluded that a woman’s greatest legacy should not be measured by the number of social clubs she belongs to, but by the lives she impacts and the values she instils in her children.
