Renowned human rights lawyer and lead counsel to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has urged the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to sanction lawyers who deliberately misrepresent court proceedings and judgments.
In his weekly article titled “Weekend Musings: When Lawyers Become Merchants of Distortion,” Ejiofor warned that the growing trend of distorting court outcomes to clients and the public is eroding confidence in Nigeria’s justice system.
He stressed that lawyers owe a duty to present accurate accounts of court proceedings, noting that integrity remains the legal profession’s greatest asset.
According to him, misleading clients for personal or professional gain undermines both the Bar and the administration of justice.
Ejiofor recalled instances where lawyers falsely claimed victory after court sittings, leading clients to celebrate judgments that never existed.
He also suggested that the recent live-streaming of a Federal High Court judgment in Abuja reflected growing concerns over the misrepresentation of judicial proceedings.
He called on the NBA to strengthen ethical standards and discipline lawyers found guilty of deliberately distorting court proceedings, insisting that honesty must remain a sacred tradition of the legal profession.
