When successful entrepreneurs are celebrated, their achievements often attract admiration. But when their journeys are documented, their experiences become lessons for generations yet unborn.
This was the central message at the maiden Chidi Anyaegbu Annual Public Lecture Series and book presentation held at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam Campus, Anambra State, where the life and entrepreneurial accomplishments of the founder and Chairman of Chisco Group of Companies, Chief Chidi Anyaegbu, came under the spotlight.
Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, who delivered the keynote address at the event on Thursday, described Anyaegbu as a worthy role model whose remarkable entrepreneurial journey demonstrated how vision, diligence, competence and determination could transform humble beginnings into a thriving business empire.
For Otti, the celebration went beyond honouring an accomplished businessman. It was also an opportunity to emphasise the importance of documenting the experiences, struggles and achievements of successful Nigerians to inspire younger generations and preserve valuable knowledge.
He argued that the stories of accomplished entrepreneurs should not be allowed to disappear with time, stressing that documenting their experiences would provide practical lessons for aspiring business owners and promote sustainable growth across different sectors of the economy.
The governor particularly commended Anyaegbu for building the Chisco Group into a diversified enterprise with interests in transportation, logistics, real estate, oil and gas over nearly five decades.
According to him, the company’s growth illustrates the possibilities available to entrepreneurs who combine determination, effective management and a clear business vision.
He noted that Anyaegbu’s contributions extended beyond personal business accomplishments to job creation, economic growth and the provision of services supporting individuals and businesses across Nigeria.
“Today’s celebration is not merely about honouring a successful businessman but also recognising the impact of his investments and foresight on the wider society,” Otti stated.
The governor also applauded the scholars, researchers, editors and other contributors who worked on the publication, describing their efforts as significant in preserving the businessman’s entrepreneurial journey and the evolution of the Chisco Group.
He observed that the book equally highlighted the difficult operating environment confronting Nigerian entrepreneurs, including inadequate infrastructure, poor access roads, unreliable electricity, insecurity, geopolitical uncertainties and changing customer expectations.
Otti encouraged participants to obtain copies of the publication, noting that the experiences of successful Nigerians could provide practical guidance for emerging entrepreneurs.
Anyaegbu: A Story Beyond Business
For a businessman whose entrepreneurial journey has spanned almost five decades, the Chisco story represents more than the expansion of a private enterprise. It also reflects the possibilities of building an institution that creates employment, provides essential services and contributes to economic activities across the country.
This was the significance attached to the occasion by the Chairman of the event and former Imo State Governor, Chief Achike Udenwa.
Udenwa described the gathering as an opportunity to celebrate success, philanthropy and the values that sustain achievement.
He challenged wealthy Igbo entrepreneurs to give back to society, emphasising that discipline, determination, hard work, humility and trustworthiness remained essential ingredients for building sustainable business enterprises.
His message reinforced the broader objective of the lecture series: encouraging successful individuals to translate their achievements into opportunities for societal development.
COOU’s Vision and Anyaegbu’s Investment
For Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, the event also represented an important milestone in its efforts to strengthen the relationship between academia, entrepreneurship and community development.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kate Omenugha, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to providing platforms for initiatives that contribute to societal advancement.
She said Anyaegbu’s vision for the university held significant prospects for advancing transportation education and promoting philanthropy in Nigeria.
In his response, Anyaegbu expressed gratitude to the university for providing him with an opportunity to contribute to society through the endowment and other development projects.
He explained that the integrity of the Vice-Chancellor influenced his decision to invest in the institution, describing her as a mover of initiatives and an achiever.
The Chisco boss also appreciated everyone who contributed to the planning and successful organisation of the event, expressing gratitude for the recognition and honour bestowed on him.
A Legacy Set in Stone
Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of the occasion was that the celebration of Anyaegbu’s achievements was accompanied by tangible investments in the university’s future.
The event featured groundbreaking ceremonies for a new Department of Transportation Management building and the Chidi Anyaegbu Multipurpose Auditorium.
These projects, alongside the endowment, are expected to strengthen the university’s academic infrastructure and provide opportunities for the advancement of transportation management education.
The book presented at the event, titled The Godfather of Transport, Chisco: Platinum Footprints of Enterprise — The Life, Legacies and Leadership of Chidi Anyaegbu, provides a documented account of the businessman, his enterprise and the values associated with his leadership.
The publication gives the occasion a significance beyond the usual celebration of an accomplished personality. It provides an opportunity to preserve an entrepreneurial journey for research, learning and inspiration.
Ultimately, the Chidi Anyaegbu Annual Public Lecture Series has opened another conversation about the responsibility of successful Nigerians to society.
While wealth and business expansion are important measures of entrepreneurial achievement, the investments made in people, institutions, education and future generations also form part of a lasting legacy.
And as the new COOU projects take shape, Anyaegbu’s story is being preserved not only in the pages of a book but also through physical structures intended to serve generations of students.
