COMMENTARY: Nigerians Must Say No If Ongoing Political Alliances Turn To Just Power-Grabbing Tools: Politicians Be Warned

By David Onwuchekwa

The political coalition movements currently unfolding in Nigeria have stirred mixed reactions across the country.

While some citizens view these alliances as a possible route to democratic renewal, many others are approaching them with justifiable caution. At the heart of their concern is the fear that these coalitions may simply be power-grabbing tools, driven more by personal ambitions than by any genuine desire for national transformation.

One major worry is the lack of a shared ideological foundation among coalition partners. Without a unifying vision, any alliance risks being short-lived or unstable.

Nigerians are also wary to see the same familiar faces, those who have long contributed to the country’s stagnation, resurface under new political banners, promising change they may not truly intend to deliver.

That said, these coalitions did not arise in a vacuum. Mounting public dissatisfaction with governance under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), rising insecurity, economic hardship, and increasing pressure from politically aware youths have all fueled the current momentum.

Many see alliances as the only viable way to unseat dominant political forces and force a new direction in leadership.

But for these efforts to be meaningful, coalition leaders must go beyond rhetoric. They must agree on clear, binding principles, communicate transparently with the public, and commit to national interest over selfish calculations.

Most importantly, they must welcome the inclusion of young people and women in both planning and execution, not just as tokens, but as equal stakeholders in reshaping the country’s future.

If genuinely pursued, these coalitions could deepen Nigeria’s democracy, encourage issue-based politics, and revitalize public confidence in governance.

But if hijacked by personal ambition or marred by internal disunity, they may only serve to reinforce the very dysfunction they claim to oppose. The path is narrow but the choice is clear.
