Blasphemy: Court sentences cleric Abduljabbar to death by hanging

A Upper Sharia Court in Kano has sentenced embattled Islamic cleric, Sheikh Abduljabbar Kabara, to death by hanging for blasphemy.

The court, presided over by Ibrahim Sarki Yola, delivered the judgment on Thursday, bringing an end to a high-profile case that has drawn widespread attention.

In addition to the death sentence, the court ordered the seizure of the cleric’s mosques by the state government. It also ruled that 182 books used by Abduljabbar for propagation be forfeited and deposited in public libraries for general use.

The judge further directed media organisations to refrain from broadcasting the cleric’s teachings and ideologies.
Sheikh Abduljabbar was earlier arraigned on charges of blasphemy against the Holy Prophet and incitement, allegations that led to his prosecution under Sharia law in the state.
