Kano State has reinforced its position as a key driver of Nigeria’s transition from research-based innovation to real-sector industrial growth with the successful hosting of the Federal Government’s Energise Commercialisation Now (ECoN) initiative.

The three-day programme brought together policymakers, investors, researchers and entrepreneurs to accelerate the conversion of local innovations into market-ready products and sustainable businesses.

Speaking at the event, the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, described the initiative as a bold step towards unlocking the country’s vast innovation potential. She urged stronger collaboration among government, industry and academia to drive inclusive economic growth.

The First Lady also commended the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh (SAN), for spearheading the initiative, noting that it would help bridge critical gaps in Nigeria’s innovation ecosystem for the benefit of citizens.

A standout participant, Engr. Humphrey C. Nsofor (FNSE), Chairman/CEO of New Tech Engineering Company Limited, played a prominent role during the engagements. He emphasised the need for practical engineering solutions and stronger private-sector leadership to scale innovations into viable industries.

According to him, Nigeria possesses the technical capacity but must strengthen its commercialisation pathways.

Engr. Nsofor further lauded the minister’s efforts, adding that the initiative would significantly contribute to wealth creation and job generation.

Representing the state government, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, said Kano’s hosting of the national launch underscores its strategic importance as a commercial hub and its determination to reclaim its industrial heritage.

The programme featured innovation showcases, pitch sessions and investment-focused “deal rooms,” where innovators connected with financiers and manufacturers, leading to preliminary agreements and partnerships.

Officials noted that the initiative is expected to boost domestic manufacturing, create jobs and enhance Nigeria’s competitiveness in regional and global markets.

For Kano, renowned for its legacy in textiles, agro-processing and trade, the event signals a renewed push toward innovation-driven industrialization and economic revitalisation.

Also in the ministerial entourage were the National Co-ordinator of the Executive Order 5 Office in the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, Engr. Ibiam Oguejiofor; Engr. Humphrey C. Nsofor (FNSE, FNICE, FNISafetyE), National Coordinator, South-East Elders and Youths Alliance for Tinubu 2027 and National Consultant, Advanced Integrated Vocational Training Centres (AIVTC-POCACOV) Projects; and Mr Luther Onyemkpa, Special Assistant (Technical) to the Honourable Minister.
